International Comic-Seminar & Comic-Salon Erlangen — The Comic Monastry
The Erlangen International Comic Salon took place from May 30 to June 2, 2024, with the Comic Seminar being held the week before. The head of the seminar, Ralf Marczinczik (comic artist, art director and illustrator), secretly refers to it as a comic monastery, because for almost a week it’s all about making comics and nothing else, from 8 in the morning until late at night.
This year, Cuculum was able to experience this first-hand. With David von Bassewitz (Stockhausen), Naomi Fearn (Berliner Schnuppen, Zuckerfisch) and Katharina Greve (Das Hochhaus, Die dicke Prinzessin Petronia) as top-class lecturers and surrounded by experienced comic artists and authors, a work was created that was subsequently presented at the Comic Salon.

Kurzgedichte in zwei Dimensionen is the name of the result and, as the name suggests, it reads in two directions. Consisting of scraps of poetry by Kathrina s. East together with surreal images, a weave of sequences is created, continuing both horizontally and vertically. The work was exhibited during the Comic Salon as part of the group exhibition Wandel | Kurz & Bündig at ZAM, in downtown Erlangen.

My thanks go to the Kulturamt Erlangen, the lecturers, the seminar leader and all the other participants, because a week can set a lot in motion, although some things will need some time still to progress. Until then, it’s all about enjoy the Prix Paul.
